IceCaps Take 3-1 Series Lead over WBS

by Staff Writer / Pittsburgh Penguins

A pair of power play goals was enough to give the St. John’s IceCaps a 2-1 win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Final on Thursday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena.

The win was the third in a row for the IceCaps, who now hold a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series, with Game 5 slated for Saturday night in Wilkes-Barre.

The game remained scoreless for the first 39-and-a-half minutes before Will O’Neill’s one-timer dinged off the post and bounced in behind Peter Mannino during a five-on-three power play for his first goal of the postseason.

The Penguins netted their first home goal of the series at 6:48 of the third period when Brian Dumoulin’s point shot deflected off of the skate of a St. John’s defenseman and beat Michael Hutchinson glove side for the defenseman’s third goal of the postseason.

But Josh Lunden took advantage of the IceCaps’ ninth power play of the night, grabbing a loose puck behind the Penguins net and wrapping a shot around for his first goal of the playoffs at 9:19.

Mannino was outstanding despite suffering the loss, stopping 29 of 31 shots on the night. Hutchinson turned aside 17 pucks in the win.
