PITTSBURGH, PA - The Pittsburgh Penguins and real estate developer Horizon Properties Group have entered into a letter of intent to jointly develop a nationally-franchised hotel on Centre Avenue adjacent to the new Pittsburgh arena.
Targeted toward arena patrons and visitors to the city alike, this upscale seven-story hotel will have approximately 135 rooms, of which almost half will be suites. Amenities will include a barista bar in the hotel lobby and a full service restaurant with an outdoor patio dining area near the northeast entrance to the arena. Because of its principal location near Chatham Center, One Mellon Center and the U.S. Steel building, the hotel’s two to three large conference rooms will allow downtown companies to hold meetings of all sizes in the facility. As well, the hotel will have access to 130 parking spaces on the private deck above the four-story arena garage to accommodate hotel guests.
With striking views of the new arena and the picturesque Pittsburgh skyline, the hotel will also hold an important role in the revitalization of the city, helping to strengthen the vital Centre Avenue link between uptown and downtown.
Horizon brings a strong tradition as a developer of strategically-placed hotel projects to the table, citing prominent projects like the Hampton Inn & Suites in Blairsville, Pennsylvania (adjacent to Chestnut Ridge Golf Resort and Conference Center), the Hampton Inn & Suites in Washington, Pennsylvania (adjacent to the Meadows Casino and Racetrack), Hilton Homewood Suites in Southpointe II (under development), Cambria Suites (Choice Hotels) in Southpointe II (under development) and Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex Hotel at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Indiana, Pennsylvania (under development).
Hotel design concepts have been submitted and the hotel brand will be announced at a later date. It is anticipated that the hotel will be open in August 2010.
