Hornets Win Opener at Nationals

The host Pittsburgh Hornets had a successful start at the USA Hockey 18-and-under National Championships Wednesday with a 4-1 victory over the Buffalo Regals at the RMU Island Sports Center.


J.T. Miller had three assists and Joey Mottiqua, Dylan Trombetta and Larkin Jacobson each had a goal and an assist to lead the way for the Hornets. Jake Achenbach also scored a goal, and Matthew Skoff stopped 31 of 32 shots to record the victory in net.

In other first-day action, Shattuck St. Mary’s defeated the Mid-Fairfield Blues, 4-3; the Cleveland Barons toppled Detroit Little Caesars, 4-3, in a shootout; the Philadelphia Jr. Flyers beat Team Maryland, 6-5, in overtime; the Los Angeles Jr. Kings edged Russell Stover, 3-2; and the Boston Jr. Bruins defeated the Dallas Stars, 4-3.

Round-robin competition continues today and tomorrow, with the semifinals set for Saturday and the championship game Sunday.

Among the featured games Thursday will be the Pittsburgh Hornets taking on the Dallas Stars at 2:30 p.m. and Shattuck St. Mary’s facing Team Maryland at 4:30.

On Friday, the Hornets will meet Detroit Little Caesars at 12 noon.
