Hockey in July

by Staff Writer / Pittsburgh Penguins

By Travis White

When people think about July in Pittsburgh, many think overwhelming heat, thunderstorms, and the beginning of the Dog Days of the Summer. In recent years though, many young hockey players now have the opportunity to continue their hockey fun in mid-summer through the Penguins Hockey Development Hockey in July programs

Penguins Hockey Development is offering two major events in the month of July : the Mite Jamboree and Training Camp with Dan Bylsma.

The Hockey in July Mite Jamboree will be held at CONSOL Energy Center on Friday July 12th and Sunday July 14th. The Jamboree will include MIte players with a 2005 birth year and younger. There are four divisions with four teams in each division. Each division is named after a species of penguin: Rockhopper, Chinstrap, Gent, and Emperor. The divisions will be separated according skill level, including newbies, novices, solid skill, and advanced.

Each team will at least play four games over the course of two days: three round-robin games, plus a playoff game, with each team playing two games per day. In the playoff round teams will participate in one of two championship contests: the Platinum Game or the Gold Game. There will be championship and runners-up team trophies to take back to the home rink. Furthermore, each participant will receive a commemorative take-home participation medal.

Then, starting Monday, July 15th, Training Camp with Dan Bylsma will begin. Training Camp will also be held at CONSOL Energy Center, from July 15th through July 19th for five days of instruction by Penguins Head Coach, Dan Bylsma, who will be on the ice each day with the youth players. The two age groups (Squirt/Pee Wee and Bantam/Midget) will be lead by Coach Dan and his staff of instructors. Joining Bylsma, will be current Penguins assistant coach Todd Reirden, along with Christian Albitz, who was a former Bowling Green Varsity(NCAA) goaltender and teammate of Dan and Todd.

In addition to on-ice instruction each day the camp includes daily off-ice training, as well as video breakdown sessions with Coach Dan. Parents are encouraged to attend these sessions with their player! Each participant will also receive a camp jersey and tee shirt.

Training Camp emphasizes skill development and building character and self-esteem. Also, quite importantly, especially at this team of year, the emphasis is on having fun!

At a time of year when the weather is heating up, Hockey in July allows youth players to cool it on the ice. Of course, they will be creating a little heat of their own through competition and hard work!
