Zach LaDuke’s five point night, including a hat trick, helped two-time defending Class AA state champion Greater Latrobe to a 9-1 victory over Moon in Thursday night’s quarterfinal round matchup at Kirk S. Nevin Arena.
Greater Latrobe advances to the semifinal round for the third consecutive season. They will take on No. 4 seed Peters Township next Monday night at 7 p.m. at Mellon Arena.
Joshua Singley added two goals and an assist, Jayson Angus a goal and three helpers and Noah Batis chipped in with a goal and two assists for the Wildcats.
Goaltender Shane Brudnok stopped 15 shots to pick up the victory.
Semifinalists from all three Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League classes will battle it out next Monday and Tuesday at Mellon Arena for the right to play in the title games of the 2010 Penguins Cup Championship Series presented by 84 Lumber, scheduled for March 27 at the Igloo.
On Monday, March 22, Kittanning and Serra Catholic will drop the puck at 5 p.m. in Class A action, followed by Latrobe and Peters Township. The nightcap features Class AAA combatants Upper St. Clair and Seneca Valley at 9 p.m. in a rematch of last season’s semifinal contest.
The semifinal round concludes on Tuesday with the following schedule: Mars and Bishop McCort squaring off at 5 p.m. in Class A; Bishop Canevin and West Allegheny doing battle at 7 p.m. in Class AA; and Shaler and Canon McMillan concluding the day with a 9 p.m. faceoff in Class AAA.
Tentative game times for the Penguins Cup finals on March 27 are: Class A – 5 p.m.; Class AA – 7 p.m.; and Class AAA – 9 p.m. The Penguins Cup finals will follow the Penguins-Flyers game, which is set to begin at 1 p.m.
