Hockey fans are in luck – the pinnacle of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ promotional lineup is here.

And, those who attend Thursday’s game at 7:30 p.m. at Mellon Arena have a chance to bring home a unique piece of Penguins history.

The Classic Penguins DVD Series begins that night as all fans in attendance will receive the first in a series of five DVDs containing the franchise’s greatest games -- as well as a special collectible box to store all five DVDs.

The box and first DVD are only available at Thursday night’s game against the Montreal Canadiens. None of those items or the other DVDs will be available in stores, so the only way to get this once-in-a-lifetime series is to attend the designated games. The rest of the series will be distributed in order at home games on December 8, January 7, February 2 and March 7.

The first DVD contains the Penguins’ Game 6 triumph over Minnesota on May 25, 1991, that clinched the franchise’s first Stanley Cup championship. The Penguins rolled to an 8-0 road win over the North Stars as Mario Lemieux had a goal and three assists and Joe Mullen notched two goals, while Tom Barrasso stopped 39 shots to post the shutout. The Penguins claimed the series 4-2.

On Dec. 8 against the Minnesota Wild, the second DVD will be distributed to fans in attendance. This DVD contains the Dec. 27, 2000, game in which Lemieux ended his retirement and returned the ice against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

After a three-and-a-half-year hiatus, Mario’s one goal and two assists in a 5-0 win over the Maple Leafs made this an unforgettable night. It was Lemieux’s first game action since retiring after the 1996-97 season and he registered his first point (an assist) just 33 seconds into contest.

The third DVD will be given out at the Jan. 7 against the Atlanta Thrashers. It features the Penguins’ wild 10-7 win over the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1989 Stanley Cup playoffs on April 25.

Lemieux, in his first postseason with the Penguins, exploded for five goals and eight points in the contest to tie two NHL playoff records.

On Feb. 2 against the Ottawa Senators, the fourth DVD will be distributed to fans in attendance. It features the April 9, 1993, game against the New York Rangers in which the Penguins captured their 16th-straight win, which established an NHL record.

Continuing his scoring rampage after undergoing cancer treatment, Lemieux scored five goals in the 10-4 win. Mullen added a hat trick in the triumph.

The Classic Penguins DVD Series concludes on March 7 against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The fifth installment features the Penguins’ 6-5 win over the Chicago Blackhawks on June 1, 1992, that clinched a second-straight Stanley Cup championship.

Six different Penguins scored in the game and Ron Francis produced the game-winner for the Penguins, who swept the Blackhawks, 4-0. Lemieux had a goal and three assists and collected his second-straight Conn Smythe Trophy as playoffs MVP.
