by Staff Writer / Pittsburgh Penguins
The American Hockey League announced today that Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins goaltender Brad Thiessen has been named the Reebok/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Mar. 28, 2010.

Thiessen began his shining week by stopping all 31 shots he faced in earning his third shutout of the season on Wednesday, as the Penguins defeated the Norfolk Admirals 3-0.  He was named the game’s number one star.  He went right back to work on Friday in the rematch of the two teams, and came within 8:55 of his second consecutive shutout.  He turned aside 26 of 27 shots to help the Penguins to a 3-1 win, and was named the game’s second star.

Thiessen rounded out the weekend by stopping 37 of 39 shots in the Penguins’ 2-1 setback against the Worcester Sharks on Sunday.  He came within one save of his season high of 38, reached in his first AHL victory on November 13th at Albany.

Thiessen went 2-1-0 this past week, making 94 saves on 97 shots over his three appearances for a save percentage of .969.  He allowed just three goals in 180 minutes played, for a goals-against average of 1.00.

The native of Aldergrove, BC has gone 11-12-1 in 25 appearances with the Penguins this season, ranking fourth among AHL rookies with a 2.51 goals-against average and third with a .913 save percentage.

Thiessen was a Hobey Baker Hat Trick finalist following the completion of his last season at Northeastern University.  He led the Huskies to the NCAA Tournament last year, posting a record of 25-12-4 in 41 games.  He finished a three-year career at Northeastern with a record of 52-46-12 in 111 appearances.  He was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent on April 3, 2009.

In recognition of his achievement, Thiessen will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming Penguins home game.

The Penguins are home this Wednesday, March 31st for a 7:05 pm faceoff against the Adirondack Phantoms.  It is 1980’s Night at Mohegan Sun Arena!  Great seats are available by calling the Penguins offices at (570)208-PENS.  Tickets are also available at the Mohegan Sun Arena box office, any Ticketmaster location, or by calling 1-800-745-3000.
