The Pittsburgh Penguins, in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL), will honor the UPMC High School Hockey Players of the Month for December during the Jan. 25 game against Washington.

Student winners for December are Wes Waldschmidt of North Allegheny High School, Matthew Giunta of Plum High School, Josh Mandic of Mt. Lebanon High School and Morgan Nickerson of Meadville High School.

Last month in the North Division, junior Wes Waldschmidt scored four goals and had nine points in four games for the North Allegheny Tigers.  He also excels academically with a 4.0 GPA.

In the East Division, senior Matthew Giunta recorded six goals and 12 points in five games for the Plum Mustangs. 

Mt. Lebanon senior Josh Mandic excelled in the South Division scoring six goals and 16 points in five games last month.  He averaged over three points a game for the Blue Devils in December.

The West Division honoree is sophomore Morgan Nickerson of Meadville.  Last year, he became the first freshman player in school history to lead the team in scoring.  In December, he recorded seven goals and 12 points in four games.
