I’m sure you are just as excited as we are to have returned to Consol Energy Center for the 2013-2014 Pittsburgh Penguins hockey season! To kick off the Ice Crew’s first blog post of the new hockey year, we will be sharing some of our memorable “firsts” from the summer to pre-season!

First practice: Eight days after the newly formed Crew was announced, we returned to the ice for our initial practice in preparation for the season to begin. Over a dozen Ice Crew veterans joined seven new members for an afternoon of skating. Within our first practice was another new addition: our first time learning the new on-ice positions! Two more snowplows were added to our pattern, allowing us to go beyond the blue lines to reach the center of the ice. We now have a total of 13 skaters on the ice to efficiently clean the entire surface in less than two minutes. All of us were able to practice the new skating format during our July 28th practice, as well as speed and skill drills.

First charity event: One of the most rewarding parts of being on this Ice Crew is the opportunity to be involved in so many great charity events. Our first of the year was the walk for ALS in downtown Pittsburgh where we joined Coach Bylsma to go one mile to show our support and cheer on the other walkers. We are always happy to be a part of events like this for such great causes and are looking forward to many more this season.

First pre-season game: During the home opening pre-season game, we debuted not only our new skating positions (as mentioned above), but also many of our new Ice Crew members! The new members made their initial appearance either on-ice or in-arena promotions. It was great to see how excited they were to be on the ice or executing promotions for the first time during a game! The veteran skaters were also extremely pumped not only to see how much the new members loved the experience, but also to be back and take the ice again themselves for the first time this season. It is always a memorable event, no matter if it is our first time on the ice, or our third of fourth year!

First time as a Mrs.: Lastly, I’d love to briefly share my own personal first this summer: becoming a “Mrs.” Between auditions and the start of the pre-season I got married and was lucky enough to be able to have some of the Ice Crew there with me bringing their cheer and support as always. A part of my wedding was even influenced by an intermission activity; one of my favorite parts of the intermission at Consol is when we are able to toss T-Shirts to the fans, so I figured “why not do something similar at my wedding reception?!” by creating custom wedding T-Shirts to throw to the guests. The overall day was a blast and I feel very fortunate that I was able to experience something so wonderful with my now husband, family, and friends.

That wraps up our firsts for now - We hope to see you for the first Penguins regular season home game on October 3rd!
