Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin
was named NHL ‘First Star’ for the week ending Jan. 22 – the second straight week and fourth time this season that Malkin has been honored by the league.
Malkin has already previously been named ‘Third Star’ for December; ‘Third Star’ last Monday for the weekend ending Jan. 15; and ‘Third Star’ for the week ending Dec. 18.
Malkin led the Penguins to four wins last week – improving the team’s winning streak to a team-high six games – by scoring at least one goal in all four contests. In total, Malkin finished the week with five goals and seven points in two games.
Malkin’s hot stretch increased his personal goal and point streaks to six games, during which he has nine goals, four assists and 13 points. His six-game goal-scoring streak tied his career-long, which he established during the first six games of his NHL career (Oct. 18-Nov. 1, 2006; 7 goals total).
Malkin, who leads the NHL with 58 points (26G-32A), tallied his seventh game-winning goal in Sunday’s 4-3 overtime win against Washington, the second-best total in the league behind Detroit’s Johan Franzen (8). Malkin also leads the NHL with a 1.41 point-per-game average and ranks second behind teammate James Neal
with 196 shots.
On Sunday, Malkin will make his fourth All-Star Game appearance at the 2012 All-Star Game, which will be played at 4 p.m. at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa.
