Castle Shannon’s Alice Kilgore has been a Penguins season-ticket holder for nearly 40 years. Prior to the 2007-08 hockey season, Penguins captain Sidney Crosby
made a special hand delivery of Alice’s season tickets.
At that time a local Pittsburgh reporter asked her if she thought the Penguins would win the Stanley Cup.
“Not this year, maybe next year,” she said gently tapping Crosby on the shoulder.
So it was said, and so it came to pass.
Alice’s prediction turned out to be dead on accurate. While the 2007-08 Penguins team fell short of their championship quest, the following season, just as Alice said, Pittsburgh went on to hoist the coveted trophy after knocking off the Detroit Red Wings in seven games.
In honor of Alice’s soothsaying abilities, Crosby made a return visit to hand delivered her season tickets for the 2009-10 season. This time though, he brought a 35-pound surprise…the Stanley Cup.
“This is wonderful. I can’t believe it,” Alice said of her surprise. "Can I kiss it? Can I kiss him?"
Seconds later Alice kissed the Cup and gave Crosby a peck on the cheek.
“I don’t want to let (the Cup) go," she said. "It’s beautiful. Can I keep it? Because it’s not going anywhere else. It has to come back here in June.”
“I hope you’re right,” Crosby said.
After delivering the tickets, Crosby posed for pictures, signed autographs and chatted with Alice about their summers, Crosby's playoff injury from Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final ("It's much better") and, of course, Alice's prediction.
“I was right wasn’t I?” said Alice, whose been a season-ticket holder since the 1971-72 season. “It was a lucky guess. (The reporter) asked me and I had to tell him what I thought. (Crosby) didn’t like it though.”
“Driving here, I remember coming to this house (in 2007),” Crosby said. “I remember her saying we wouldn’t win (the Cup) until the next year. I was disappointed to hear that but it ended up working out just like she said.
“I’m afraid to ask when we’ll win the next one.”
Alice didn’t have any predictions for the upcoming season but she did have some advice for Crosby and the Penguins.
“We’re not going to say two in a row,” Alice said. “We’re just going to say we’re going to win the Stanley Cup next year. Then in June, when we have it, then we’ll say two in a row. We can’t think about what we did last year.”
Before leaving, Crosby signed autographs and posed for pictures with some of Alice's neighbors, who braved the rain to witness the event. But this may not be the last time Crosby visits Alice at her home.
“It was great that she was able to predict it,” Crosby said. “If she keeps predicting things like that then we’ll be here every year delivering her tickets.” Notes
