Former Penguin Colby Armstrong will join Paul Steigerwald and Bob Errey as special guest analyst for tonight’s Penguins’ preseason home opener against Carolina, which will be televised by Pittsburgh’s CW (WPCW). Game time is 7 p.m. at CONSOL Energy Center.
It’s a unique way of re-introducing Armstrong, who was a fan favorite as a winger with the Pens from 2005-08. Having recently moved back to Pittsburgh, he will assist the Penguins in several capacities this season, from occasional broadcasts to community and fan relations. He also will work as a commentator/analyst for NHL rightsholder SporstNet in Canada.
“We’re excited to have Colby back in Pittsburgh, and tonight’s special guest appearance on the broadcast is just the start,” said Terry Kalna, the Penguins’ senior vice president of sales and broadcasting. “He’ll appear for a select number of games on our radio pre- and post-game shows. He’ll be involved in several initiatives with fans and sponsors. He’ll help us out with community outreach. He can be a very valuable asset for the Pens.”
ROOT Sports will produce tonight’s broadcast. The game is airing on CW because ROOT is carrying Pirates baseball.
“We are excited to welcome Colby back to Pittsburgh and look forward to working with him in his various roles,” said Doug Johnson, VP/Executive Producer for ROOT Sports.
Armstrong was traded by the Penguins to Atlanta in 2008. He played 476 career NHL games with the Penguins, Atlanta, Toronto and Montreal from 2005-13.
All Penguins preseason games also will be carried on radio by the Penguins’ flagship station, 105.9 The X (WXDX-FM).
