Because of overwhelming demand, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation has extended the order period for Civic Arena roof ornaments. The Foundation now will be accepting orders through Wednesday, December 14 at 5 p.m.
The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation already has taken orders for more than 40,000 of the ornaments – which are crafted by Wendell August Forge from pieces of the steel roof at the old Civic Arena. All proceeds benefit Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation youth charities.
The Foundation and Wendell August Forge have purchased an additional 95,000 square feet of the old arena roof to meet the demand for the commemorative ornaments – which are on sale for $29 each. They may be ordered exclusively at www.pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org.
Any order placed now will be delivered in January.
“The demand for these ornaments has succeeded our wildest dreams – and what it means so far is that, thanks to the overwhelming support of the general public, the Penguins Foundation can now fully fund three youth and school programs next year,” said Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. “The original plan was to make 6,000 of these ornaments, and we already have sold more than 40,000. It is amazing.
“Many of the orders are accompanied by a personal story of a memory of the old building – someone who’s father helped build the roof; someone remembering the Beatles’ concert, or Mario Lemieux’s comeback, or the Beach Boys, or raising the Stanley Cup banners. And they really like the fact that it is supporting our youth charities.”
