Anton Zlobin’s 2013-14 season started off slow because of an injury that had kept him off of the ice for months, dating back to the previous year.
“It was a tough year for me,” said Zlobin, who returned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s lineup on Nov. 11. “I was sitting eight months without skating, so when I started skating Coach (John Hynes) helped me out a lot with that and he started to teach me the systems. And when you know the systems well, good things are going to happen.”
They certainly did that spring.
Zlobin, 21, had a monstrous postseason performance in the Calder Cup Playoffs. He scored six goals (which tied for the team lead) and ten points in 16 games as WBS advanced to the Eastern Conference Final for the second straight year and fifth time overall – where they eventually lost in six games to the St. John’s Ice Caps.
The winger produced several clutch goals during WBS’ run, as he finished the season tied for second in the AHL with three playoff game-winners. He’s certainly no stranger to coming up big when it counts, as Zlobin’s trophy case includes the 2012 Memorial Cup.
Zlobin notched both goals, including the game-winner in overtime in the Shawinigan Cataractes’ 2-1 victory over the London Knights (OHL) in the 2012 Memorial Cup Final, giving the Cataractes their first Memorial Cup title in franchise history.
“That was a great memory for me,” Zlobin said. “Winning the Memorial Cup. And this year with Wilkes-Barre, we made a good run, we made the conference final. It was a great experience playing.”
He’s proving adept at finding the back of the net in the AHL, but knows he must continue to work on his release.
“I think I’m a goal scorer,” Zlobin said of his on-ice strengths. “I still practice my shot to make my game even better.”
The young player is looking forward to starting the 2014-15 season off healthy and hopes to make a solid impression with the new coaching staff and management during the upcoming season.
“Now there’s a new coach and new management and I need to show up,” Zlobin said. “When you’re healthy, you want to show up and make a difference. I need to move faster and have quicker stops and starts.”
