Washington rallied for two goals to post a 5-4 overtime win Friday night at Mellon Arena in preseason action.

Washington got on the scoreboard 8:19 into the contest. Quintin Laing’s shot rebounded into the goal past Marc-Andre Fleury for a 1-0 lead.

The Penguins knotted the game at 1-1 with 8:36 left in the period. On a two-man advantage, Sergei Gonchar fired a shot into the net. Ryan Whitney and Michel Ouellet assisted on the play.

Matt Pettinger gave the Capitals a 2-1 lead 1:35 into the second.

Connor James evened the score at 2-all at 5:17 when his wrister found the back of the net. Max Talbot earned the assist.

Dominic Moore gave the Penguins a 3-2 lead 1:03 later when he roofed a short-handed backhander into the goal. Mark Eaton assisted on the play.

Washington’s Tomas Fleishchmann knotted the game with 11.3 seconds on the clock.

Gonchar made it 4-3 with 11:57 to play. Whitney’s shot rebounded to Gonchar in the slot. He fired it into the back of the net for his fourth goal of the preseason. Nils Ekman added an assist.

The Capitals struck back when Jakub Klepis scored a power-play goal with 1:16 left in regulation.

Former Penguin Matt Bradley won the game for Washington 2:59 into overtime with a goal.

The Penguins travel to Hamilton, Ontario, on Saturday to take on Buffalo.
