The BRICK Invitational Super Novice Hockey tournament is North America’s largest squirt hockey tournament representing the top nine and ten year olds from Canada and the United States, and is considered hockey’s version of the Little League World Series. The tournament, which has been in existence for 24 years, is held annually in Edmonton, Alberta at the West Edmonton Mall. This year’s 14 team tournament will be held July 1st-7th, 2013. Many current National Hockey League all-stars have previously competed in this prestigious tournament, including Dany Heatley (Minnesota Wild), Steven Stamkos (Tampa Bay Lightning) and Jonathan Toews (Chicago Blackhawks) to name a few.
The Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers have partnered to form Team Pennsylvania sponsored by GNC, which consists of the top 2003 born players in all of Pennsylvania. Both the Flyers and Penguins identified the top players in their respective regions and sponsored “select” teams that competed in a series of tournaments. The team held a selection camp on May 18th at Iceoplex in Southpointe as players from both teams attended from which Team Pennsylvania was selected. These players will compete in the Ronald McDonald Tournament in Toronto June 7-9th, followed by a pre-Brick Tournament in Philadelphia June 21-23 prior to traveling to Edmonton on June 29th. Former Penguin and Flyer, Marc Recchi, has been named head coach for Team Pennsylvania this year with assistant coaches Mike Schall from Bethel Park and John Povey from Philadelphia closing out the staff.
The team will consist of 8 players from the Penguins Selects team (#1,33,67,21,9, 96, 82 and 73 see roster for names), 7 players from Flyers Selects (#3, 11, 19, 23, 28, 88, 31) and 3 import players from Nova Scotia (#29, 15, 10).
