The Pittsburgh Penguins have agreed to terms with defenseman Brian Dumoulin on a six-year contract, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Jim Rutherford.
The deal begins with the 2017-18 season and runs through the 2022-23 season, and has an average annual value of $4.1 million.

Dumoulin, 25, has been a key component to the Penguins' back-to-back Stanley Cup championships, as he played in all 49 playoff games in that span, and recorded 14 points (3G-11A). In the 2017 playoffs, Dumoulin had an average ice time of 21:59 minutes, the most of any Penguins skater, and his plus-9 paced all team defenders. He assisted on Carl Hagelin's empty-net goal that sealed the 2-0 victory in the decisive Game 6 of the Cup Final against Nashville.
As a member of the Pens' 2016 Stanley Cup winning team, Dumoulin partnered with Kris Letang for much of the playoff run on the team's top defensive pairing. Dumoulin scored the Penguins' first goal in the decisive Cup-winning Game 6 in San Jose. He averaged more than 21 minutes per game in the '16 playoffs, more than 2:30 over his regular-season average.
The 6-foot-4, 207-pound defenseman scored his first career playoff goal in Game 5 of the 2016 Eastern Conference Final against the Tampa Bay Lightning, the same team he scored his first career regular-season goal against on Dec. 15, 2014.
A native of Biddeford, Maine, Dumoulin has accumulated 33 points (2G-31A) in 163 NHL games. His first full NHL season came in 2015-16 when he accumulated 16 assists in 79 regular-season contests. During the '16-17 campaign, he finished second among Pens defensemen in average ice time with 20:33 minutes, fourth on the team with 99 blocked shots, and fifth on the club with 113 hits. Dumoulin has been with the Penguins full-time since getting his first NHL playoff experience in the five-game series against the New York Rangers in 2015.
Prior to making the jump to the NHL level, Dumoulin skated for three seasons with the Penguins' minor-league affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. He helped the WBS Penguins advance to back-to-back conference finals appearances in 2013 and '14. Dumoulin was WBS' second-leading scorer in the 2014 playoffs with 12 points (3G-9A) in 17 contests.
Dumoulin was acquired by the Penguins in a 2012 draft day trade that saw the Penguins also acquire Brandon Sutter and the eighth overall pick (Derrick Pouliot) from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Jordan Staal. The Hurricanes drafted Dumoulin in the second round (51st overall) of the 2009 draft.
Dumoulin had a distinguished career at Boston College, as he left a Hobey Baker Award finalist (top collegiate player), and a two-time NCAA champion, in three seasons with the Eagles.
