Penguins forwards Nick Bonino and Drew O'Connor, as well as goaltender Casey DeSmith will represent Team USA at the 2023 IIHF World Championship, it was announced today by USA Hockey. This year's World Championship will be held from May 12-28 in Tampere, Finland and Riga, Latvia.

Bonino represented Team USA at the 2015 and '18 World Championship, winning the bronze medal at each tournament. This will mark O'Connor and DeSmith's first time representing the United States at an international level.

Bonino, 35, returned for a second tour of duty with Pittsburgh this season after being acquired at the trade deadline on March 3, but was limited to three games due to injury. In total, the Hartford, Connecticut native recorded 10 goals, nine assists and 19 points in 62 games in 2022-23, marking the seventh-consecutive season he has reached the 10-goal plateau.

O'Connor, 24, is coming off his third season with the Penguins organization, splitting time between Pittsburgh and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. With Pittsburgh, the Chatham, New Jersey native set career highs across the board with five goals, six assists and 11 points in 46 games. He also played 20 games with the WBS Penguins, tallying eight goals, 14 assists and 22 points.

In his fifth season with Pittsburgh, DeSmith, 31, started 33 games and played in 38 games, both career-high marks. The Rochester, New Hampshire native tied his career high of 15 wins, originally set in 2018-19.
