Defenseman Jacob Trouba almost quit skating at the age of 4 after he realized he wasn’t a gifted skater right away on the ice. Trouba told NHL Central Scouting that he said to his dad he wanted to quit, but Trouba’s dad made him “stick with it and try it out.” The advice the defenseman received from his father paid dividends as the young skater is now considered by many scouts as one of the top prospects coming out of the United States. After his outstanding play for the U.S. Under-17 squad in 2011, Trouba was promoted to the U.S. Under-18 team for the final 21 games of the season. The University of Michigan commit helped the United States capture gold after scoring the opening goal of the gold medal game in the 2011 World Under-18 Championship. During the 2012 World Junior Championship, Trouba was the youngest representative for Team USA, posting three assists in six games. The defensive-minded defenseman also was a key contributor to the United States’ second consecutive gold medal run at the World Under-18 Championship in 2012, posting three points (1G-2A) and a plus-5 rating in six games.

“Trouba is a physical specimen whose athleticism, size and skating ability are all in concert with each other. The opposition has a hard time handling him once he is in motion, as he is an absolute beast on the puck and can pump his powerful legs while protecting the puck incredibly well as he explodes up the ice … he plays a staunch defensive game, as he can easily contain forwards and neutralize them to diffuse scoring opportunities.”
-McKeen’s Hockey

After completing his second season with the U.S. National Team Development Program in Ann Arbor in 2011-12, Trouba is committed to play at the University of Michigan in the fall of 2012.

Fellow NHL Draft prospect Patrick Sieloff is a longtime friend and Trouba’s defensive partner -- the two players have competed on the same team since playing minor hockey for the Compuware organization.
