Weekend Roundup

On Friday night, Roberto Luongo made 25 saves en route to a 2-0 shutout victory over the Buffalo Sabres in his first game back with the Florida Panthers since being acquired from the Vancouver Canucks prior to Wednesday’s trade deadline.

Let’s just let that last sentence simmer for a bit…..

Okay moving forward. It is a busy weekend for the Panthers with the win over Buffalo on Friday and a 5 p.m. matinee against the Bruins tonight at BB&T Center. Let’s not waste any more time and get right into it….

On a side note, the Theme From Louie was played at BB&T Center following this save thus combining two of my favorite things and making me a very happy Panthers fan.

Shutout Stats:

66: Roberto Luongo’s shutout of the Sabres was his 66th of his NHL career and 27th with the Florida Panthers.

44: The number of saves Luongo made in his last shutout with the Panthers which came in a 5-0 win over the Washington Capitals on February 7, 2006.

112: The number of games since the last Panthers shutout which occurred on April 22, 2012 when Jose Theodore made 30 saves in a 3-0 win over the New Jersey Devils during the 2012 NHL Playoffs.

Tweet of the Game

Power moves:

The Cats scored a pair on the power play last night including this blast from Dmitry Kulikov. Number 7 was all over the ice against Buffalo logging 23:32 of ice time while playing considerable minutes on both the power play and the penalty kill.

…On to Boston

The Basics

Panthers Bruins
Record 24-32-7 41-17-5
Points 55 87
Place 7th in Atlantic 1st in Atlantic

Tonight will be the last of five matchups between the Florida Panthers and the Boston Bruins. The last time these two teams played was Tuesday night in Boston, a game the Bruins won 4-1. But that was B.L. (Before Luongo) so I think we could see a much different result this afternoon.

RED Hot Cats to Watch

Roberto Luongo: Not much needs to be said here that already has not been said 1000 times before, but did I mention the Vancouver Canucks gave up six goals in their first game post-Luongo….just sayin…

Vincent Trocheck: I’m going to throw Vinnie T in here even though he just made his Panthers debut on Friday night. Trocheck centered a line with Scottie Upshall and Tomas Fleischmann while playing on both the power play and the penalty kill. On top of the strong debut, Trocheck also received some Twitter love:

Give it up for the Day Light’s Savings

Hopefully everyone set their clocks forward last night…while losing that hour of sleep sucks, there is nothing like that extra hour of daylight in the evenings, hopefully you put it to good use. Personally, the extra daylight means I can squeeze a surf session in after work…and sorry to anyone from Boston who may be reading this while shivering through the sub-freezing weather, but down here in South Florida we can hit the beach in the winter…

While we are on the subject of time, how about a hand for the 5 p.m. matinee’s? Today is going to be a great day. Watch a Panthers’ win and get home just in time for the season finale of True Detective. Sounds like a perfect evening.

Pre-game playlist

While this is only the first season as Atlantic Division rivals for the Panthers and the Bruins, I am finding it pretty easy to dislike the Bruins, and nothing would make me happier than the Cats walking away with a win in the teams’ final meeting of the year. Get those ‘Luuu’ chants ready, it should be a good one.
