Panthers play-by-play man Steve Goldstein is in Vancouver to cover the Olympic games for Westwood One radio. And while he's there, he'll be blogging on his experiences and his thoughts on the hockey tournament and the Olympics in general. Only seen on floridapanthers.com, enjoy as Steve brings you closer to the action (unless you're actually in Vancouver and at the games that is).
It's the best possible scenario for publicity, the sport, North America and anything else you can think of. The United States and Canada will play for the gold medal Sunday at 3pm Eastern Time (on NBC in the US).
It could be the biggest sporting event ever in Canada and we will see how high the ratings go in the U.S. I expect at least 10 million people will watch this game.
Team USA has been rolling and already has a win over Canada in the tournament. It will be tough to beat the Canadians twice, in Canada! GM Brian Burke did a masterful job in putting this young, speedy, feisty, hard nosed team together. Brian Rafalski has been phenomenal on the back end, and every forward chips in. David Booth would've fit perfectly with this group. They are all just like him on and off the ice...play hard, fast, nose for the net, insightful and classy. It's been a blast being around this team. Zach Parise is my new, non Panther, favorite player in the NHL!
For Canada, they had a scare at the end of their semi-final game as they held off Slovakia 3-2. Perhaps team Canada thought they had the game wrapped up with a 3-0 lead in the 3rd. That said, they will be hyped up for this game. Anything short of the gold medal would be a failure in the nation's eyes, especially if it winds up being to the USA for the 2nd time in the tournament.
All I can say is I am resting up tonight and getting ready for the wildest atmosphere I have ever been in. People were in the street yelling and beeping horns till 1am Saturday morning...and I am on the 31st floor and heard all of this going on!!! I appreciate being here for this game and the opportunity to do the radio call for Westwood One is a career highlight for me.
I'll be back on FoxSports Florida Tuesday night in Atlanta for the Panthers-Thrashers game. It will be a long day of travel on Monday and I'm not looking forward to that.
Anyways enjoy the game!
