THRILLER IN BRIDGEPORT

Portland trailed Bridgeport 1-0 heading into the third period on Dec. 5 at Webster Bank Arena. Pulling goaltender Sam Brittain as the Pirates approached the final minute, the club’s leading goal scorer Kyle Rau scored his ninth goal of the season at 19:00 of the third period through a scramble in front of the Sound Tigers net.

Only 10 seconds later, the Pirates struck again. Garrett Wilson closed in on the Bridgeport defense after the faceoff, recovering the puck and finding John McFarland with speed to connect for the game-winning goal. McFarland took the puck straight to the net before dancing around the Sound Tigers defense to tuck his sixth goal of the year behind the goalie.

McFarland was named the game’s first star, while Brittain made 26 saves to earn his third win of the season and second star of the game honors.
