Though he’s spending much of his time circling North America to call various NHL playoff games for Versus and NBC, veteran play-by-play man Joe Beninati still took time to talk to PI about the NHL’s second season and upcoming offseason.
Panthers Insider: How does having Nashville, Atlanta and others in the first round help promote hockey in some non-traditional markets?
Joe Beninati: Anything that shows the competitive balance of the league helps in every market. For me, we would have preferred the likes of Nashville to move on, but that was the toughest series they could’ve had in the first round. This is the best time of the year for the hockey fan. The better the games are, the more apt they are to hook the fans in the non-traditional hockey markets.
PI: It seems like VERSUS and NBC are giving fans some really in-depth coverage of the game on television. What is your impression?
JB: I know Versus has made a concerted effort to do that. They are trying to give the hockey fan as much in-depth coverage as possible. You are appealing to the die-hards and you are helping to educate the fans who are new to the game. The more impact we can have in and around the game is something we are trying to accomplish.
