The Great Playoff Debate

by Staff Writer / Florida Panthers
Panthers broadcasters Steve Goldstein (FSN Florida) and Randy Moller (790 The Ticket) will be breaking down the Playoffs series all the way until the Stanley Cup. The two will each pick a winner for each series and why they think that team will win. There will of course be some jawing, but all in good fun. Let the games begin.

Steve "Goldie" Goldstein -

Its playoff time in the NHL & that means the "gold sheet" is out again to successfully predict the post season.

Montreal vs Boston... Its Canadians all the way as Guy Carbonneau has his team rolling. Alex Kovalev has been reborn and those Habs fans are ready. Montreal in 5.

Pittsburgh vs Ottawa... Payback time for the Sid and his buddy Malkin. Sens wiped the Pens out last year but this season will be different. Ottawa is without captain Daniel Alfredsson. They will be without a win too! Pittsburgh breaks out the brooms in 4.

Washington vs Philadelphia... Two teams that turned it around from non-playoff seasons a year ago. Only room for one to advance so I will take the best player in ANY sport right now, Alex Ovechkin. It'll be a war... Caps in 7.

New Jersey vs NY Rangers... The rivalry is resumed. This should be a great series and come down to a 7th game. Rangers have the clutch Chris Drury & his ot, game 7 winner will do in the Devils. Brodeur & Lundqvist will keep ths series low scoring throughout. NY in 7.

Detroit vs Nashville... I love upsets but the Red Wings are just too good for the Predators. A masterful coaching job by Barry Trotz got the Preds to the playoffs but with Detroit's hall of fame type talent, especially on defense, Nashville will be done in 6.
San Jose vs Calgary... A great first-rounder featuring the playoff tested Flames against the Sharks, trying to cut their teeth in the post-season. Jerome Iginla had a quiet 50 goal season and would be the MVP if not for Alex Ovechkin. Iginla does it all, and the Flames will outmuscle San Jose. Calgary in 7.
Minnesota vs Colorado... Jacques Lemaire may be the best coach in hockey. If the Wild's boss was in New York or Canada he would get a lot more publicity. That said, one of the most dynamic players in the game plays for Lemaire, Marian Gaborik. Yes, Moller the kid has a ferrari and he will fire it up...and drive it past the Avs into the 2nd round. Wild win in 5.
Anaheim vs Dallas... Another juicy Western match-up. The Ducks simply have too much for the Stars. Too much great blueline play, too much toughness and too much golatending. Give me those elements in the playoffs! The Ducks also have the proper leadership on and off the ice. Brooms are out and changes will be made in Big D... Ducks swim in 4.
Enjoy the playoffs and as I tell you every year with these picks...DON'T PUT UP THE MORTGAGE!

Randy Moller
Again, Red Deer the playoff "prediction master" will prove Goldie is off base, as upsets will be the norm in the wild first round of the Eastern Conference....

Montreal vs Boston... Rookie goaltender Carey Price will feel the heat, and fold along with his "satisfied" teammates from the aggressive forchecking the Bruins will throw at the Habs. Zdeno Chara will be the difference. Boston steals the 1st game in Montreal, and win in 7.

Pittsburgh vs Ottawa.... Upset of the playoffs. With Sid "the Kid" Crosby not at 100%, Pittsburgh's other threat Evgeni Malkin will be stymied by a "re-born" Senator team. Martin Gerber will make up for a "so-so" regular season and will "steal" the series in 6.

Washington vs Philadelphia... League MVP Alex Ovechkin's one man show will be entertaining, but the Capitals magic ride will come to a screeching halt. Flyers have more depth, and will win the battle in 7 games.

Rangers vs Devils... Classic goaltending matchup! Brodeur will outplay "King" Lundqvist, Jagr will be a non-factor in a close checking series, and Brent Sutter's Devils will win in 6 games. Zach Parise will have a breakout series.

Detroit vs Nashville... Any team that possess the league's best defenceman in Nik Lidstrom and the best two defensive forwards(combo) in Kris Draper and Kirk Maltby, has to be favored in any series. Hasek will outperform young Predator netminder Dan Ellis in goal... Wings in 5.

San Jose vs Calgary... Hart Trophy candidate, and 50 goal scorer, Jerome Iginla can carry a team in the playoffs by himself, but not this year. Flames went 5-3 vs the Sharks, but the San Jose boys will shut down Calgary's one stop offense. Iron Mike Keenan will be outcoached, and Brian Campbell will help workhorse Evgeni Nabokov with two home shut outs... Sharks bite the Flame-outs in 5.

Minnesota vs Colorado... Goaltending will play a big part in this series. Avs Jose Theodore vs the Wild's Niklas Backstrom. Minny has home ice, and will need it. Veterans Joe Sakic and Ryan Smith will find their youth again, and Marian Gaborik will fire up his Ferrari sooner than you think... Colorado in 6.

Anaheim vs Dallas.... This will be the "bloodbath" series in the West. Ducks will spend too much time in the penalty box, JS Giguere will have a let down. Stars Brad Richards will key a lethal power play, Marty Turco will shine in goal... Stars in 7.
