The Great Playoff Debate: The Finals

by Staff Writer / Florida Panthers
Panthers broadcasters Steve Goldstein (FSN Florida) and Randy Moller (790 The Ticket) are back once again to break down the Playoffs series all the way until the Stanley Cup. The two will each pick a winner for each series and why they think that team will win. There will of course be some jawing, but all in good fun.

Afters a slow start, Randy Moller made up ground in the picks department getting both Stanley Cup finalists right. Moller is now 6 of 14 in the picks department. While he can't win the prize as this year's prognosticator, he gives it one last shot to up his percentage. Steve Goldstein on the other hand started off hot, picking 8 of 12 series correctly. But in the conference finals, he failed to get one series correctly. Still at 8 of 14 series right, there's no way he can be caught. Goldie is on twitter and you can follow him at twitter.com/goldieonice. He'll be tweeting throughout the playoffs during the games.

STANLEY CUP FINALS

Pittsburgh vs Detroit... After going a scintillating 2-0 in the NHL playoff semifinals against poor Goldie, the momentum I’ve gained will propel me to the Cup! (prediction, that is)

What’s the difference in this year’s Cup Final re-match between Detroit Red Wings and the Pittsburgh Penguins? The outcome will be very different. Last year, the “baby” Pens looked a little overwhelmed in spots in their series loss to the Motor City Super Stars. That has changed. Leader Sidney Crosby is a year older (and wiser), and has dominated through the first three series. He has points in 12 of their 14 games, and with Evgeni Malkin providing the 1-2 punch, Detroit’s defense will surely be tested. Guns for hire Chris Kunitz and “grey beard” Bill Guerin have been an overwhelming upgrade from last year’s Ryan Malone and Gary Roberts. Detroit’s main concern is injuries to stallworths Nicklas Lidstrom and Pavel Datsyuk. I like Detroit’s 3rd and 4th line depth, but Marc-Andre Fleury will outperform Chris Osgood in goal. Ring up another Championship for the city of Pittsburgh in ’09, Penguins steal the hardware in 6.

STANLEY CUP FINALS

Pittsburgh vs Detroit... I took a shot with the underdogs, Carolina and Chicago, and it backfired. So here we go again...Penguins. vs. Red Wings for the Cup. Hard to pick against Detroit as they are so mentally strong and have the combination of smarts, experience, youth and talent. But I can't go against Sidney Crosby right now. He is playing dominant hockey and his linemates Bill Guerin and Chris Kunitz have followed his lead. With Evgeni Malkin centering the 2nd line and Pitt's slight edge in goal, I'm picking the Penguins in 7. The Steel City celebrated the Super Bowl in February...time for another parade.
