The Great Playoff Debate: Finals

by Staff Writer / Florida Panthers
It's the final showdown. After some more right and wrong picks in the Conference Finals, Panthers broadcasters Steve Goldstein (FSN Florida) and Randy Moller (790 The Ticket) break down the Stanley Cup Finals between the Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins.

The two will each pick a winner for each series and why they think that team will win.

Just a little synopopsis so far, Goldstein holds the slight edge over Moller in correct picks. Goldstein has guessed nine series correctly, including both Conference Final winners while Moller has guessed eight series correct, including the Pittsburgh-Philadelphia Series correctly.

Detroit vs Pittsburgh...

As predicted before the playoffs, it's the year of the Wings.

Detroit survived a scare against Dallas but once again proved its metal, winning game 6 on the road while the Penguins emerged from the East in dominant fashion. The final shapes up to be a great match-up of two popular teams and enough star power to go around. The NHL has got to love this!

It’s amazing that a team can lose players like Steve Yzerman and Brendan Shanahan and not miss a beat. The Red Wings have done just that. Nicklas Lidstrom continues to be the league's best player and Detroit has a super combination of speed, skill and grit up front. They have dominated in the playoffs & that will continue in the Cup Finals.
The Penguins won't know what hit them in game 1. After beating up on a languishing Ottawa team and then exposing the blueline challenged Rangers and Flyers, Pittsburgh faces a different animal in Detroit. The Wings defense is considerably better than the Penguins opponents so far.

Great job by Sid the Kid getting to the Cup Finals in year three in the NHL but that's as close as he gets to the Cup, for now anyway. Detroit Red Wings win the Stanley Cup finals in 6 games.

Detroit vs Pittsburgh...

Once again, Goldie is way off his rocker.

Detroit returns to the Cup Finals for the 1st time since '02, and I do agree with Steve whatshisname, the NHL is loving this "all-American" Finals(first since '03), but the mighty "tundra waddlers" will outclass the "Motor City" blades men.

Although I give the Wings a "slight edge" with their six collective defensemen, the Penguins are much stronger up the middle, with Sidney Crosby (21pts), Evgeni Malkin(19pts), and Jordan Staal(4 goals in 6 games against the Flyers)this playoff year. Goaltending is a "wash", as both Marc-Andre Fleury (1.70GAA, 12 wins), and Chris Osgood(10-2)have been stellar. Expect the same brilliance this Finals too.

Detroit's offence struggled against Dallas, scoring just two or less goals in 3 of the 6 games in the semis, and if Pittsburgh can score 1st in each game (.725 winning percentage when they do), Western Pennsylvania will be celebrating with one of my favorite malt beverages, Iron City. Take it to the bank, Pittsburgh raises the banner in 6.
