The Great Playoff Debate 2009: Round III

by Staff Writer / Florida Panthers
Panthers broadcasters Steve Goldstein (FSN Florida) and Randy Moller (790 The Ticket) are back once again to break down the Playoffs series all the way until the Stanley Cup. The two will each pick a winner for each series and why they think that team will win. There will of course be some jawing, but all in good fun.

After going an impressive five-out-of-eight in the picks department in the first round, Steve Goldstein followed that up with an equally Scintillating second stanza, going 3-1 in the Conference Semis. Goldstein is now 8 out of 12 in his playoff picks. Not too bad. Goldie by the way is now on twitter so you can now follow him at twitter.com/goldieonice. He'll be tweeting throughout the playoffs during the games. On the other hand, Randy Moller followed up his three of eight performance with another round equally as bad, picking only Carolina to move on to the Final Four. Moller has only picked 4 out of 12 series correctly. But that's ok. He thinks he's got this round pegged.

EASTERN CONFERENCE

Pittsburgh vs Carolina... Hard to deny Carolina’s resolve and continued “over achievement” throughout these playoffs. This series with Pittsburgh should be a classic! Staal vs Staal. 'Canes Cam Ward has been outstanding in goal for Carolina, and must outplay Marc-Andre Fleury for the Hurricanes to advance to the Finals. Sidney Crosby has elevated his game and Malkin should shine against Carolina’s defense. Home ice will be a factor. Carolina must steal a game in Steel City, or all hopes go down the river. Penguins in 7

WESTERN CONFERENCE

Detroit vs Chicago... Got to love the young Blackhawks and their aggressive, yet discipline style of play. Brian Campbell must step up and support the dynamic Hawk “shutdown” duo of Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook. Red Wings are banged up from their physical 7-game series with the Ducks, but with Zetterberg, Datsyuk and Hossa playing the first two games at home, look for Detroit to take a two game lead in Motor City. Only way Detroit loses to Chicago is if Chris Osgood gets outplayed by Nikolai Khabibulin. With Detroit’s home ice advantage, and superior power play, this one will be over soon. Red Wings in 5

EASTERN CONFERENCE

Pittsburgh vs Carolina... Had Carolina in the 1st-round but picked against them in the 2nd. Tough call here with Sidney Crosby playing great hockey. But you can't ignore two straight game 7 road wins against New Jersey and Boston. The Hurricanes have “it", whatever it is! They find different heroes each night and are getting strong goaltending from Cam Ward. Can they stop Crosby and Malkin? My guess is yes. Pittsburgh beat subpar goalies in the first two rounds. Ward is a different animal. What the heck? Carolina with a 3rd straight game 7 road win.

WESTERN CONFERENCE

Detroit vs Chicago... Love the orginal 6 rivalry matchup between Detroit and Chicago. Even Patrick Kane said after the Hawks took out Vancouver, “what could be better than Hawks/Wings?" The kid is smart! And really good too. Chicago's blueline is super and I have a suspicion the Bulin wall is about to peak. I'm going Chicago in 6 over the Red Wings.
