Summer Plans: Jonathan Huberdeau

This week's Panther: Jonathan Huberdeau (interview was conducted on April 8, 2019)

Q: How long after the season ends do you usually begin your offseason training?
HUBERDEAU: I'll probably take a few weeks off. It really won't take long this year. I want to get back at it as soon as possible and work hard throughout the summer. I just want to get back into training, get on the ice and start getting ready for next season. I think it's going to be special.
Q: Is it a little weird going from having such a scheduled life throughout the season to being back in charge of your own time and creating a new routine during the summer?
HUBERDEAU: It does make a difference. You're used to having a routine the whole year. The summer routine is a bit different. I like having that routine in the season, though. When the offseason starts, it's a little tough early on, but after a while you kind of start getting used to it.
Q: When you look back at this past season, is there one experience that sticks out?
HUBERDEAU:Finland was good. We had a lot of fun and team-bonding there.

Q: What areas of your game will you be focusing on the most this summer?
HUBERDEAU: My strength, obviously, especially my lower body. That's what I want to work on every year. I want to be quicker and more efficient on the ice. I also want to work on my skating.
Q: After spending nearly every day with your teammates for the entire season, who are you going to miss hanging out with the most on a regular basis during the offseason?
HUBERDEAU: Honestly, it's every guy. I like seeing them all. I drive to the arena with Troch [Vincent Trocheck] every game day, so he's the guy that I probably see the most. But you miss everyone during the summer. It's exciting when you all get back together again in September.
Q: What's the biggest non-hockey event currently on your schedule this summer?
HUBERDEAU: I'm going to Trocheck's wedding. I'm really looking forward to that. I'm going to be one of his groomsmen. It's really nice that he put me in his wedding. It means a lot to me.

Q: In your experience, is a hockey wedding different than a regular wedding?
HUBERDEAU: I don't know if it's different, but you do typically see a lot of guys from around the league that you know, other players. I guess that's what makes it somewhat different. A regular wedding is a bit closer, but when you have so many hockey players around it really expands it.
