Thornton Nominated for Masterton Memorial Trophy

SUNRISE, Fla. - The South Florida chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association (PHWA) announced today that Florida Panthers forward Shawn Thornton has been selected as the club's 2017 nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.

A leader on and off the ice, Thornton, 39, appeared in his 700th career National Hockey League game on March 27 in Buffalo. Throughout his NHL Career, the two-time Stanley Cup Champion has played for the Panthers (2014-17), Boston Bruins (2007-14), Anaheim Ducks (2007-07) and Chicago Blackhawks (2002-06) recording 42 goals and 60 assists (42-60-102).
Thornton is the only player to begin his professional career after expansion to play 700 NHL games and 600 AHL games.
The Shawn Thornton Foundation (@ThorntonFDN) is dedicated to helping find cures for diseases close to Shawn's heart, specifically Parkinson's and cancer. Through his foundation, Thornton holds an annual 'Pucks and Punches for Parkinson's' golf event and does charitable work in Boston and South Florida.
The Masterton Trophy is awarded each season under the trusteeship of the PHWA to the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. Panthers forward Jaromir Jagr was the recipient of the 2016 Masterton Trophy.
The Masterton Trophy winner is selected from a poll of the 30 chapters of the PHWA at the end of the regular season.
A $2,500 grant from the PHWA is awarded annually to the Bill Masterton Scholarship Fund, based in Bloomington, Minn., in the name of the winner.
The PHWA first presented the Masterton Trophy in 1968 to commemorate the late Bill Masterton, a player with the Minnesota North Stars, who exhibited to a high degree the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. Masterton died January 15, 1968 following an injury suffered in a game.
