SUNRISE, Fla. – Sunrise Sports & Entertainment announced today that the Iceplex and Florida Scholastic Hockey League (FSHL) hosted a successful 2013 USA Hockey High School Boys’ Varsity National Championships this past week. The tournament, which included 20 teams from 14 states, including two from the state of Florida, saw a terrific ending as Santo Margarita (CA) won an overtime thriller 4-3 over Regis Jesuit (CO) to claim the title.

“We are more than thrilled to see the competition on the ice as well as all of the volunteers off the ice make this such a great national tournament all around,” said Vice President and General Manager of the Iceplex Jeff Campol. “There were a lot of people involved that made our second hosted tournament amazing for the parents, coaches and most importantly the players and I can’t thank them enough.”

The USA Hockey High School National Championships marks the second time that the Iceplex has hosted a national championship. The Panthers official practice facility has also hosted the Under-14 National Championships in 2002.

The most recent tournament started on Wednesday, March 20 with round pool play and included teams from Cypress Bay High School (Weston) and East Lake High School (Palm Harbor). Quarterfinals and Semifinals were held Saturday, March 23 with Santo Magarita and Regis Jesuit each winning to set up the final. Panthers C Stephen Weiss dropped the puck prior to the championship game.
