SUNRISE, Fla. -- Matthew Tkachuk scored two goals to help the Florida Panthers claw back and pick up a key point in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Winnipeg Jets at FLA Live Arena on Saturday.

Sitting at 33-27-7 after earning three out of a possible four points in their back-to-back against the Chicago Blackhawks and Winnipeg, the Panthers now trail the New York Islanders by just three points for the second-wild card spot in the Eastern Conference with one game in hand.
"We played on back to-back nights and put up 48 [shots] against a team that's rested and desperate," Panthers coach Paul Maurice said. "I thought we played our [butts] off tonight."
Earning an early power play, the Jets opened the scoring when Mark Scheifele one-timed a pass from Blake Wheeler past Sergei Bobrovsky from the slot to make it 1-0 at 6:43 of the first period.
Adding to Winnipeg's lead later in the period, Nikolaj Ehlers carried the puck into the center of the right circle before ripping a wrist shot off the far-side post and in to make it 2-0 at 15:03.
On a power play of their own, the Panthers got on the board and cut their deficit in half when Tkachuk sent a rebound -- as he often does -- past Connor Hellebuyck to make it 2-1 at 16:44.
Already on the power play, the Jets extended their early lead even further when, after gaining a 6-on-4 advantage with a delayed penalty, Vladislav Namestnikov scored to make it 3-1 at 19:07.
Cutting into their deficit in the second period, the Panthers struck back when Aleksander Barkov set up Sam Reinhart for a goal with an incredible no-look pass on the power play to make it 3-2 at 4:09.

Following a faceoff win in the offensive zone, Namestnikov lit the lamp again when he pounced on a rebound and tucked the puck around Bobrovsky to extend Winnipeg's lead to 4-2 at 12:59.
Returning from the second intermission with a collective head full of steam, the Panthers struck just 33 seconds into the third period when Marc Staal took a pass from his brother Eric and fired a shot from the slot that clipped off Hellebuyck's glove and floated into the twine to make it 4-3.
"We were kind of trailing all game long," Staal said. "I thought we did a good job in the second regrouping and coming after it. It's a big point. It's tough losing in overtime, but three out of four on a tough weekend, we've got to take the positives because we've got to keep on winning."
On a 4-on-3 power play, the Panthers pulled even when Tkachuk followed up on a shot from Barkov and cashed in on the rebound to make it 4-4 with this third point of the game at 6:24.
In overtime, the Panthers generated some quality looks and nearly cashed in on an open net, but in the end it was Scheifele roofing his own rebound into the top of the cage that gave the 5-4 win to Winnipeg at 4:31.
Playing very well in defeat, Florida finished with 5.48-2.71 lead in expected goals.
"We're very deep," Tkachuk said when asked about the team's confidence. "When we have everybody contributing and everybody playing the same way and being predictable and working together, you can see like in the second half of that game what we can do it."

CATS QUOTES

"It's obviously taken a big step since Barky's come back. Realistically since he's come back, we've been able to score a few." - Matthew Tkachuk on Florida's power play
"Big goal to get us going and try to get the comeback going. We were on the ice quite a bit together, so it was fun to contribute in that way, the two of us. Hopefully we can continue it." - Marc Staal on teaming up with his brother Eric for a goal
"If you look at our shot chart, 19 is all over the four-foot band in front of the net. His hands are so good. All we have to do is deliver it and get it there, which is exactly what the 4-on-3 goal was. It was just a puck into Tkachuk, and he makes that play. When you have a gamer like that, you always feel like you have a chance." - Paul Maurice on Matthew Tkachuk
