Well, that was fast.
The short workweek is almost the books – there are few things more precious in this world than holidays that fall on a Monday – and that’s certainly worth celebrating. So before you waste precious work time today debating how late you’re going to sleep in tomorrow, treat yourself to this week’s edition of Rats Roundup.
SUMMER OF SIGNINGS
Speaking of sleeping in, the Panthers didn’t do very much of that over the long holiday weekend. The free agency window opened up Friday, followed by a cavalcade of contracts.
New faces joined the squad. The team’s current budding stars signed on for the long haul. And a Panthers prospect jump-started his pro career after lighting up college hockey this season. Pretty busy holiday weekend, no?
It was so busy, in fact, that the most sensible way to recap this in Rats Roundup is with a good ol’ fashioned chart.
Our very own Jameson Olive has the breakdown on the Cats’ free agent signings – including Keith Yandle, who was signed the day before the NHL Draft – right here.
EKBLAD IN IT FOR THE LONG HAUL
Two years ago, Aaron Ekblad donned a Florida Panthers jersey for the first time, after hearing his name called first in the 2014 NHL Draft.
One Calder Trophy, two All-Star Games and one impressive beard later, Ekblad again threw on a jersey and posed for cameras at the BB&T Center.
Also of note: as soon as Ekblad was eligible to sign an extension, he put the pen to paper on an eight-year deal, the longest contract allowed in the NHL.
GIF OF THE WEEK
Three of the four players in this GIF were eligible to sign extensions starting on July 1. By July 3, they all signed extensions of five years or more.
Big things are happening in Sunrise, people.
