SUNRISE, Fla. – Sunrise Sports & Entertainment announced today that the Florida Panthers will honor Broward County Teacher Of The Year Evelyn Schwartz of Oakridge Elementary School at the Cats-Washington game on Saturday, April 6 at 7:30 p.m. at the BB&T Center.
Mrs. Schwartz and her guest will sit in Club RED during Saturday’s Panthers game at the Broward County-owned BB&T Center. She will also be recognized during the game and presented with a special gift from Panthers President Michael R. Yormark.
Schwartz was featured in the Sun Sentinel in an article that can be read here:
“It is our sincere privilege to honor Mrs. Evelyn Schwartz as Broward County Teacher of the Year at this Saturday’s Florida Panthers game,” said Yormark. “The entire Panthers organization is committed to supporting education and we are thrilled to be able to recognize one of our community’s great teachers.”
The first-grade teacher, a 19-year teaching veteran, was selected among more than 14,000 teachers in the district. Mrs. Schwartz, whose hands-on style and modest stature has earned her the nickname “Mrs. Shorts,” was called a “community activist in every sense of the word” by Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie.
Runcie has nominated Mrs. Schwartz for statewide recognition by the Florida Department of Education. Mrs. Schwartz left a promising corporate career to become a teacher, going back to school to get the requisite education requirements. She possesses a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Florida Atlantic University and a Masters in Teaching from Nova Southeastern University.
