Panthers Prospect Shawn Matthias Provides Offensive Spark

by Staff Writer / Florida Panthers
Shawn Matthias, who the Panthers acquired in a trade with Detroit at the trading deadline this year in exchange for Todd Bertuzzi is lighting up the lamp for the Belleville Bulls in the quarter-finals of the Ontario Hockey League playoffs.

Matthias, 18, who ended the regular season by scoring a hat-trick against Toronto St. Michael’s, including the overtime GWG, has scored two goals in each of the Belleville Bulls’ first two playoff games against the Ottawa 67’s.

Despite Matthias’ two goals in game one of the series, Belleville fell at home to Ottawa 4-3 in overtime. On Tuesday night, Matthias’ two goals lifted the Bulls to a 5-4 win to even the series at one. Ottawa and Belleville will play Game Three of the best-of-seven series tonight in Belleville.

During the regular season, Matthias was the third leading scorer for Belleville. The Milton, Ontario native scored 38 goals and 35 assists in 64 games played.
