Panthers Gear Up for First On-Ice Day of Training Camp

by Mike Lewis / Florida Panthers

With Media Day occupying the first official day of training camp, the Cats take to the Panthers IceDen tomorrow for the first on-ice day of training camp.

“We’ve got a lot of competition now for [roster] spots”, said Panthers General Manager, Dale Tallon.

“It’s exciting. That’s going to make our team better.”

The first official skate for the Panthers of the 2014-15 season will have many new faces, from 2014 First overall draft choice, Aaron Ekblad to the newest Panthers signed via Free Agency, F Dave Bolland, F Jussi Jokinen, F Derek MacKenzie, G Al Montoya, F Shawn Thornton and D Willie Mitchell.

With an influx of veteran experience in a predominantly young Panthers locker room, Cats goaltender, Roberto Luongo is looking forward to being a part of a leadership group including the new Panthers that will help bring along the youngsters in the lineup.

“They know what it takes”, said Luongo of his new teammates.

“I think it’s important that those guys show the younger kids what it takes to win. Sometimes it’s not easy, you’ve got to get out of your comfort zone to get to that next step. That’s hard to do when you’re young and you haven’t been there or don’t know what it takes. The quicker we can teach these kids those things and the quicker they learn it, the better we’ll be.”

The Panthers begin their skate at 10am at the Panthers IceDen in Coral Springs. Following the practice at the JetBlue Training Facility ‘Den’ rink will be a scrimmage at 11:10 on the ‘Stadium Rink’.
