SUNRISE, Fla. – The Florida Panthers Alumni Association announced today that they have granted $1000 to help offset the costs of two deserving high school hockey players who have been selected to participate in the prestigious Chicago Showcase Tournament.
Joseph Covella of West Boca High School and Daniel Derasmo of Pope John Paul high school will each receive $500 from the Panthers Alumni Association as well as the Florida Scholastic Hockey League (FSHL)
The Chicago Showcase (April 16-20, 2008) is the premier high school ice hockey tournament in the country and it provides a forum for high school student athletes, who would not otherwise have the opportunity, to be evaluated by scouts from all over the country in every post high school program.
In years past a large number of Florida high school student athletes have won roster positions on Junior and College teams and the Florida Panthers Alumni Association has been generous enough to sponsor a deserving player who, because of financial restrictions, would otherwise not have the opportunity to participate in the Chicago Showcase
“The FSHL thanks the Florida Panthers Alumni Association for their generosity and continued support of high school ice hockey in Florida,” Peter Pearlman, President of the FSHL said. “This year, again, there are two deserving athletes who need our help and, again, the Panthers Alumni Association has not hesitated in joining with the FSHL to support our student athletes.”
The Florida Panthers Alumni Association was formed, in part to assist former players with their transition from being a player to becoming active and productive members in the South Florida business and social community. In addition, the association helps support the Florida Panther’s Hockey Club with its numerous corporate, community and civic events projects.
