Last season, Randy Moller teamed up with Bill Lindsay in the radio booth. This season, Moller flies solo, broadcasting Panthers games on 790 The Ticket.
FloridaPanthers.com recently spent some quality time with Panthers radio play-by-play man Randy Moller, who talked about Harleys, grilling and, what else, screaming lines from a movie into a microphone.
Q: Well, Randy, with no games to call do you find yourself waking up in the middle of night screaming out lines from movies?
Moller (laughing): “You know, I’ll be honest, the off-season is tough. I so enjoy broadcasting and the game of hockey. While I enjoy watching the teams in the playoffs, it hurts because I want to get back and feel that excitement.”
Q: So you get a little antsy?
Moller: “We spend so much time on the road – I’ve been living out of a suitcase since I was 14 with junior hockey, professional hockey and broadcasting – that I really miss it. I miss the games, the travel. So in the off-season I get an itch to travel. So every once in a while I’ll try to take off and, recently, I went back to the Keys. Last couple years I’ve gone down on a Harley Davidson.
“I used to own a 1992 Harley-Davidson Fat Boy. I love riding Harleys. I was fortunate to get a brand new Harley Road King from Peter at Eagle Riders Harley Rentals at Bruce Rossmeyer’s Harley-Davidson in Fort Lauderdale, and it was a pleasure. The best road I’ve ever been on is the overseas highway going south from Florida City to Key West. You see the clear water, the boats. It was something. The trip didn’t get off to a good start, I got caught in a rainstorm in North Miami on the turnpike under an overpass for nearly two hours, but I didn’t see anything but blue skies for the next two days.”
Q: You have a few favorite places in Key West?
Moller: “I like the usuals – Irish Kevin’s, Sloppy Joe’s, Captain Tony’s. The great thing about having a bike is going to some places off the tourist map. I like Turtle Kraals and the Green Parrot.
“I have to admit, though, it’s kind of weird watching NHL playoff games, teams beating the hell out of each other, sitting in a Key West establishment sipping my favorite beverage in shorts and flip flops.”
Q: What’s on the grill this summer?
Moller: “You know, I really love grilling fresh Florida fish…mahi mahi, yellowtail, grouper. I still can’t get rid of that western Alberta beef mentality, I’ve actually gotten pretty good with Florida fish. Q: Ok, wouldn’t be fair if we didn’t ask what you’re favorite movie line is after a goal?
Moller: “Well, I base mine on fan’s reactions, and after one goal all I did was scream, ‘Ma! The meatloaf.’ That was a big hit. Q: Are you saving any lines for next season?
Moller: “I have a line I’m saving for the game-winning goal in the seventh game of the Stanley Cup finals. I won’t let anyone know. I won’t tell anyone.”
Q: How about a hint? Is it a comedy?
Moller: “It’s a classic comedy drama, and that’s all my time allows for you.”
