Cats Captain Hasn’t Missed a Game in Three Seasons While Posting Career-high Numbers

SUNRISE, Fla. – The South Florida chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association today named Florida Panthers Captain Olli Jokinen as its nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.

Jokinen, 28, has played every Panthers game over the past three seasons. He has played in 290 consecutive games, 10 away from the Panthers record of 300. Last season, Jokinen set career highs in goals (38), assists (51) and points (89). This season, the Kuopio, Finland native is on pace to come close if not break the career marks he set last season. Currently Jokinen is 14th in the NHL with 83 points (37-46-83). His 37 goals are tied for the 10th best total in the NHL and his eight GWG are tied for fifth best.

The Panthers acquired Jokinen in a trade with the New York Islanders along with Roberto Luongo on June 24, 2000 in exchange for Mark Parrish and Oleg Kvasha. He is currently in his ninth NHL season and sixth with the Cats, while serving as the teams’ Captain for the third consecutive season.

The Masterton Trophy is awarded each season under the trusteeship of the PHWA to the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. The winner is selected from a poll of the 30 chapters of the PHWA at the end of the regular season and a $2,500 grant from the PHWA is awarded annually to the Bill Masterton Scholarship Fund, based in Bloomington, Minn., in the name of the winner.

The NHL Writers' Association presented the Masterton Trophy in 1968 to commemorate the late Bill Masterton, a player with the Minnesota North Stars, who exhibited to a high degree the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey, and who died Jan. 15, 1968.

The Florida Panthers conclude the home portion of the 2006-07 season this weekend when they host Washington Friday night at 7:30 p.m. and Carolina in a Sunday matinee game at 5:00 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling 954-835-PUCK or logging on to
