Mollerisms: In A Flash

by Glenn Odebralski / Florida Panthers

Welcome to Mollerisms. takes a look at some of the best goal calls of 560 WQAM radio play-by-play man Randy Moller from the 2011-12 season.

Moller's interesting goal calls actually date back to the 2007-08 season where he used calls such as "Peanut Butter Jelly Time" and "Top Shelf Where Mrs. Moller Keeps The Peanut Butter". They took on a whole new meaning at the start of the 2008-09 season. While doing a crossover show with Dan Lebatard, Lebatard asked if the crew at 790 The Ticket could make suggestions for goal calls. Then from there it branched out to listeners making suggestions. Randy started using memorable one-liners from movies, songs and just about anything else. Lines such as "We've landed on the moon" from Dumb and Dumber, "We're going to need a bigger boat" from Jaws as well as Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar On Me" have been used.

Every Monday during the off-season we will introduce a Mollerism as Moller calls a goal the only way he knows how.

Our next Mollerism looks at Tomas Fleischmann's third period goal in St. Paul against the Minnesota Wild on March 20, 2012 as Moller uses a radio host's name as part of the goal call.

Looking for their second win in a row to start off a crucial four-game road trip after coming back to defeat Montreal two nights before in a shootout, Florida found themselves in another heated battle with Minnesota.

After a scoreless first period, Scottie Upshall got the Panthers on the board with a second period power play goal. That 1-0 score would be the score heading into the final period of play.

The Wild, playing for draft seeding at that point in the season, came out strong and tied the game just 1:03 into the final stanza.

Florida had a great opportunity to take the lead once again about midway through the period as the home team took back-to-back penalties with Kyle Brodziak (tripping) and Mikko Koivu (delay of game) being sent to the box nine seconds apart. While a Kris Versteeg penalty for high-sticking killed off the two-man advantage three seconds after Koivu's penalty, the Panthers made due with a four-on-three penalty.

With all kinds of space with less players on the ice, Brian Campbell found Jason Garrison in the high slot who in turn found a crashing Fleischmann for the forward's team-leading 25th of the season with 19 seconds remaining on the power play. That gave the visitors a 2-1 lead with 6:44 left in the game and it looked like the Panthers would skate away with a huge two points.

Unfortunately the Wild had a different idea as to the outcome of the game. Pulling their goalie for the extra attacker, the home team scored on a rebound with 31 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Then Koivu won the opening face-off in the extra five minutes and was sprung by Tom Gilbert and beat Jose Theodore just 15 seconds in to nab the extra point out of the hands of the Panthers. While disappointing in just taking one point, the point Florida picked up helped them in their push for their first playoff spot in over a decade and first division title ever.

Moller's goal call can be attributed to South Florida host Billy Bag-O-Donuts who is a morning show host on 550 AM WIOZ.
