JR Panthers Host President's Day Tournament

by Glenn Odebralski / Florida Panthers

It's that time of the year again: President's Day Weekend. And that means that it's tournament time at Iceplex for the JR Panthers as they host their annual President's Day Tournament.

President's Day Tournament Division Breakdown

The tournament kicks off on Feb. 16 and runs through Feb. 18 with teams from Minor Squirt all the way up to Bantam Major. There are teams from Florida and Virginia as well as teams all the way from Oakville, Ontario and St. Petersburg, Russia. Those teams from Russia include Team Neva (Squirt Major Division), Russian Penguins (Squirt Major Division) and Team Forward (Bantam Major Division).

"We are excited about the turn out for our 2013 Florida JR Panthers President’s Day Challenge," said JR Panthers General Manager Jeremy Mylymok. "We have (3) teams from Russia registered this season along with teams from Canada and Virginia competing in this year’s tournament."

The Squirt Minor Division will have six teams compete for a championship while seven Squirt Major teams will compete for a championship. Six Peewee Minor teams will partake in the tournament while six Bantam Minor and four Bantam Major teams will square off looking for titles. The JR Panthers Bantam Major squad will get to take on Team Forward at the BB&T Center on Monday (3pm).

For the JR Panthers, it's a final opportunity to tune up for the push for State titles.

"This will be a great way for our players to get in some high quality games before they compete in their State Championships the following two weekends," said Mylymok.

While three JR Panthers teams won't be taking part in the JR Panthers President's Day Tournament, two will be in action in tournaments elsewhere. The U16 Minor team will be playing in a tournament in Colorado Springs while the U16 Major squad will be in Chicago against top competition.
