Jacques Martin's Post-game Comments vs. Tampa Bay

by Staff Writer / Florida Panthers
On the performance of the team this evening...

I think it was a great effort from everybody. Starting with our goalie, I thought Eddie made some big saves at key times in the game when we had some lapses. We came out and got two quick goals and established the tempo. Nathan and Olli had two nice plays. What I think was really good about this game is that we played well away from the puck. We got two quick goals but we kept the pressure on. Everybody kept working hard and playing well away from the puck and being responsible. So, we were getting some big efforts from everybody.

On the position for the playoffs...
I think lately we are not so much looking at the standings. We understand that what we need to do is win a hockey game and get as many points as we can. I think it was a real good week this week getting the six points. We have a chance to enjoy tomorrow, regroup on Monday, and then go on the road. It's going to be one of our most important road trips of the season. So we will take it one game at a time and wait for Tuesday.

On the play as of late...
I don't think we could look back. We need to look ahead and at how we are playing right now. I think when you look at the last three games, I think the lines have been stable, everybody is playing together, understanding their role and supporting each other. It's kind of nice to see. The specialty team came up big and Eddie came up big as well.

On the play of Weiss...
I think that someone asked me this morning about Stephen. I really feel he is making progress. When you look at our hockey club, I think that last year I like the way he competed. Unfortunately, he got hurt halfway through the season. For his career, I think it was something that he learned through that time what you do off the ice, how hard you have to work and how you can gain some benefit. Again, when you look at a kid like Stephen, you really have to believe that people like Gelinas, people like Nieuwendyk, and people like Gary were an impact on his career. Those are veteran players that are tremendously dedicated, compete hard and have had some success and won some Cups. I think Stephen is a bright young man and is really emerging. His play has really picked up. Since I put that line together of Marty, Stephen and Nathan, they have been good every night. Even if they haven't scored on certain nights, they have played against the opposition's best and done a good job.

On the presentation this evening...
Well I think it's great of the organization to surprise me with bringing my daughter here. I get an opportunity to enjoy a day with her tomorrow. This organization is extremely classy and extremely proud. I have meetings with ownership on a daily basis and I know that they have tremendous support and confidence in the plan that we have put forward. It's nice to know that people are behind you. I really believe that this organization is going in the right direction. I think we just have to keep moving forward. I think we still have a good opportunity for the playoffs. We just have to keep driving hard every night.

On the secret to making it through 1000 games...
I don't think there is any secret. I think that when I look back, my first opportunity as a head coach I was very young. I had some success in Juniors. After two years as a head coach, I had to work eight years as an assistant coach. I try to keep learning and keep getting better. Then I got an opportunity at the right place and the right time with the Senators. Good scouting and good people. I think the key is to work with good people in the organization as well as the players. To me it is no different than business. You need to have people that are committed, people that you can trust, people that want to get better, and people with high expectations. I have been very fortunate.
