Jacques Martin's Post-game Comments vs. Pittsburgh

by Staff Writer / Florida Panthers
On the big win tonight...

I think it was a good strong performance. I think we got a strong game from our leader with the hat trick. That was really a key. I thought overall we got some big saves from Alex when we had some breakdowns early in the first period. They had a couple of odd-man rushes. I thought he shut the door and did a good job. I thought that getting the goal on the power play was a key goal. I think overall we had a pretty strong game from everybody.

On the performance of Olli this evening...

I think Olli has been around this league for a while. He is a top player and that's what you expect from your Captain. It's nice to see a strong performance. We are going to need those kinds of performances going forward.

On the team doing all the little things to win...

I think a lot of times you win hockey games, the score is a result of the little things that you do. Even on our road trip, we didn't come out with wins but I thought that we had strong games. In Calgary, we had a great effort in the absence of some key players. Tonight I thought we were strong moving the puck. I thought we did a good job. This is a team that if you give them a chance to penetrate your zone with the puck, they have some great young players that have some great skills. I thought we did a good job coming back.

On the differences in the team's home and road performance...

I think maybe the results paint an untrue picture. When I look back at games in Calgary and Vancouver, those games could have easily been won. They were games when we had advantages in shots, we had advantages in chances and maybe if we scored on our power play, we win those games. That is why it is so important especially in the absence of key people, you need to have your specialty teams win the hockey game for you. I think last year in the second half our record really picked up on the road. Hopefully this year we can do the same. I am looking at the next five games before the All-Star break as crucial. For us, it is a chance to be at 43 points and get closer to the playoffs. So it is really important to understand that. Carolina is waiting for us and I think we need to play a smart game tomorrow night.
