Inside The Panthers: Bill Torrey

by Staff Writer / Florida Panthers
Florida’s 2nd episode of “Inside the Panthers” look at the career of hockey legend and Hall of Famer Bill Torrey.

“Inside The Panthers: Bill Torrey” will debut on Wednesday, November 17, immediately following FOX Sports Florida’s telecast of the Panthers/Thrashers game. “Inside the Panthers” is hosted and produced by Frank Forte.

Known as a franchise builder, Torrey has been there at the start of three different NHL teams, the Oakland Seals, New York Islanders and the Florida Panthers. His time on Long Island was especially successful. As General Manager, Torrey built a team from scratch that would win four consecutive Stanley Cup titles from 1980 through 1983.. He was named as the first team President of the Florida Panthers early in 1993, and assembled an organization and team that hit the ice a mere five and a half months later. The Panthers were playing for the Stanley Cup in the NHL Finals just three years after their birth.
“Bowtie Bill” as he is known for his omnipresent neckwear, Torrey still serves the Panthers organization as alternate governor, attending league meetings, the amateur draft and it was he who led the search this past off-season which resulted in the hiring of Dale Tallon as the Panthers’ new General Manager.
Torrey was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto in 1995, and he has been honored by both the Islanders and Panthers with testimonial banners which hang in the arenas of those 2 NHL teams. “Inside the Panthers” will chronicle Torrey’s long and distinguished career, including interviews with fellow Hall of Famer and longtime broadcaster Jiggs McDonald, current Islanders G.M. Garth Snow, Minnesota Wild G.M. Chuck Fletcher, who got his start in hockey under Torrey, current Panthers General Manager Dale Tallon, as well as numerous former Islander and Panthers players.
