SMOOTH SAILING

With a 4-2 win over the Providence Bruins on Dec. 22, the Pirates have now (like their NHL affiliate) won five games in a row (dating back to Dec. 12 vs. Providence). Over the five-game span Kyle Rau has recorded four points (3-1-4), while he and John McFarland both netted a pair of goals on Dec. 16 vs. Springfield.

Defenseman MacKenzie Weegar is currently on a two-game goal streak and has recorded three points over those two games (2-1-3). Weegar’s goal streak is the first of his AHL career, while Brett Olson tallied twice in Portland’s Dec. 22 victory over Providence.

After Christmas, the Pirates will head out on the road for a two-game trip, before returning home for a three-game homestand.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

On Dec. 21, the AHL announced that Pirates goaltender Mike McKenna had been named the CCM/AHL Player of the Week

McKenna won in all three of his starts last week and allowed just three goals on 80 shots.

On Dec. 16 vs. Springfield, McKenna made 30 saves to lead Portland to a 5-2 win. Stopping 24 shots in his Dec. 19 start against the Sound Tigers to pick up the win, McKenna ended the week with a 23-save shutout vs. Bridgeport (Dec. 20), to earn his first shutout of the season.

Currently McKenna has won in each of his last five starts to backstop the Pirates on their win streak.
