PIRATES FALL TO BEARS IN GAME FIVE

In game five of their best-of-five series, the Pirates were unable to defeat the Bears, losing 2-1. Wayne Simpson scored the lone Portland goal, with Michael Matheson and Rocco Grimaldi recording the assists. Mike McKenna made 21 saves in the game. Grimaldi led the Pirates with four assists in the postseason, while Rob Schremp and Shane Harper recorded two goals each.

MATHESON TAKES ON WORLDS

Defenseman Michael Matheson will represent Team Canada at the 2016 World Championship from May 6-22 in Moscow and St. Petersburg Russia. The tournament will mark the 22-year old’s World Championship debut.


TRIPLE OT THRILLER

In game three of the series the Pirates and Bears played into triple overtime, with the Pirates coming away with a 2-1 victory. The game set a Portland franchise record for the longest game played (103:10). Greg McKegg scored in regulation to tie the game in the third period before the two teams battled through three extra periods. Rob Flick ended the contest with a one-timer on the rush from Schremp and Corban Knight 3:10 into the third overtime. McKenna backstopped the Pirates to victory with 41 saves.

JUNIORS

JAYCE TO THE FINALS

Jayce Hawryluk and the Brandon Wheat Kings defeated the Red Deer Rebels 4-1 in their series to clinch the Eastern Conference Championship and a berth in the WHL finals. Hawryluk recorded two assists in game five and leads the WHL with 18 postseason assists. The Wheat Kings are set to face the Seattle Thunderbirds in game one of the WHL Championship series on Friday (May 6) at 9:00 p.m. (ET).
