The Portland Pirates snapped a two-game skid, defenseman Cameron Gaunce is named an AHL All-Star and Jayce Hawryluk scored four goals in two consecutive days in this week’s prospect report.

BACK TO WINNING WAYS

The Pirates topped the IceCaps for the third straight game this season with a 4-1 victory on Wednesday night at the Cross Insurance Arena, snapping a two-game losing streak. Defenseman MacKenzie Weegar scored his fourth goal of the season to get the Pirates on the board before Rocco Grimaldi, and John McFarland put the Pirates ahead 3-0. The IceCaps finally solved Goaltender Mike McKenna at 15:38 of the third period. Brett Olson capped of the game with an empty net goal as McKenna earned his 20th win of the season. McKenna’s 20 wins tie him for third in the AHL.

HEY NOW, YOU’RE AN ALL-STAR

The AHL recently announced that Pirates defenseman Cameron Gaunce will join teammate Rob Schremp at the 2016 AHL All-Star Classic this weekend. The 25-year old Gaunce leads all Pirates defensemen in scoring (1-19-20), while ranking second on the team in assists. The AHL All-Star Classic will take place Sunday, Jan. 31 and Monday, Feb. 1 in Syracuse, NY.

JUNIORS

AMAZING JAYCE

Jayce Hawryluk had quite a weekend. The 20-year old forward recorded back-to-back two-goal games on Saturday and Sunday. On Jan. 23, Hawryluk’s two tallies complimented teammate Reid Duke’s hat trick in Brandon’s 6-2 win over the Saskatoon Blades. Hawryluk’s goal stood as the game-winner. On Jan. 24 against the Regina Pats, Jayce Hawryluk lit the lamp twice again to help lead the Brandon Wheat Kings to a 4-0 victory. The 20-year old forward has recorded 43 points (22-21-43) with a +18 rating and 41 penalty minutes in 33 games with Brandon this season. Florida’s 2014 second-round pick ranks second on the Wheat Kings in goals.
