The Amerks will be heading back east...And so are the Abbotsford Heat.

Rochester had a chance to wrap up their series in Game 5 Friday night, but Abbotsford would not go quietly into the night as they scored the game's first two goals on their way to a 3-1 victory.

The Amerks can still clinch in Game Six on Sunday as they hold a 3-2 advantage in the first round of the Calder Cup playoffs.

The home team got off to a fast start once again. Abbotsford scored first for the fourth time this series when Jon Rheault scored 7:45 into the game. The winger took a drop pass on a rush and beat Tyler Plante five-hole for his second of the series.

They upped the lead to 2-0 as one-time Panther and current Heat captain Garth Murray pounced on a rebound 2:42 later.

Rochester would get one back before the end of the period when Mike York recorded his second of the series with 6:56 left. The goal was set up by Shawn Matthias with an initial shot that caroms off a defenseman and into the crease. York buried it from there. The assist for Matthias continues a strong first round for the center, as he has registered seven points (two goals) in five games and is a plus-7.

After the teams skated through a scoreless second, Abbotsford's David Van der Gulik would get the insurance goal 9:48 into the third when he intercepted an attempted Keaton Ellerby pass and beat Plante with the backhand.

Game 6 begins at 5:05pm on Sunday for the two teams.

NOTES: Matthias has picked up points in the last four games of the series...Following tonights action, York leads the AHL in scoring during the playoffs with 11 points, Jason Garrison is tied for fourth with eight points and Matthias is tied for sixth with seven...The Amerks were outshot 34-19 in the game...The teams combined to go 0 for 8 on the power play (Rochester 0 for 3, Abbotsford 0 for 5).

Amerks Can't Seal Deal In Abbotsford
By Kevin Okobzija for the Democrat And Chronicle

Other than the first six weeks of the season, the Rochester Americans have never really done anything the easy way.

So why would the Calder Cup playoffs be any different?
