Panthers News

Friday Web Hits-August 1, 2014

by Patrick McGrath / Florida Panthers

We made it to August and the NHL regular season will be here in just two months. That’s the good news. The bad news is; August is generally the slowest hockey month of the year and for many die-hard fans navigating the behemoth of August is like wandering around a dark tunnel with no light at the end. Let’s not get too doom and gloom though. We have plenty of fun Panthers content to get you through another week, so let’s take a break from staring at those calendars, and take a look at all the hottest Panthers content from around the web.

•August is not completely devoid of hockey, the US Hockey National Junior Evaluation Camp will take place Aug. 2-9 in Lake Placid, N.Y. Aside from being a total mouthful, the camp will feature three Panthers prospects G Evan Cowley (University of Denver), D Michael Downing (Michigan) and D Ian McCoshen (Boston College) are the trio of Panthers prospects who will be repping their country at the camp.

•Summer free agent acquisition Shawn Thornton recently spoke about joining the Panthers, offering advice to young players and how he gives back to the community. You can read the full story here.

•Did you know that recently signed Panthers forward Steven Hodges grew up in Canada’s Northwest Territories? Well now you do. You can enjoy this fun tid-bit and much more by reading our feature on the Yellowknife-born, Panthers prospect.

•Do you want to see a picture of Aaron Ekblad playing street hockey with kids? Of course you do.

•We mentioned last week that South Florida’s young goaltenders of the future partook in the Ultimate Hockey Goalie Camp, which was headed by Panthers goalie coach Robb Tallas and held at Florida Panthers IceDen. Now we’ve got the video from the camp and it features the best saves you will see all summer. Seriously though, look at that paddle save at 00:49! Stacking the pads at 2:05! Flashing the leather at 2:07!
