SUNRISE, Fla. – Florida Panthers Executive VP/General Manager Dale Tallon announced today that the club has agreed to terms with G Tim Thomas on a one-year contract.
“Tim is a proven winner who we are pleased to have signed,” said Tallon. “He is a fierce competitor who brings to our club a wealth of experience including a Stanley Cup Championship, two Vezina trophies and a Conn Smythe. He is a hardworking, driven and dedicated individual who will help our club achieve future success.”
Thomas, 39, has played in 378 career National Hockey League contests, all with Boston, posting a 196-121-45 all-time mark with a 2.48 GAA and a .921 save percentage. He led the Bruins to the 2011 Stanley Cup Championship, earning the Conn Smythe Trophy, posting a 16-9-0 post season record with a 1.98 GAA, a .940 save percentage and four shutouts. He is a four-time National Hockey League All-Star (2008, 2009, 2011, 2012) and a two-time Vezina Trophy winner (2009 & 2011). Thomas, along with Manny Fernandez was also awarded the William M. Jennings Trophy in 2009 for the team with the fewest goals scored against.
The Flint, Michigan native posted back-to-back 35 wins seasons (2010-2012) and has earned at least 25 wins in five of his last six NHL seasons played. Throughout his eight-year NHL playing career, Thomas was selected to the First NHL All-Star Team twice (2009 & 2011), leading the league both seasons in goals against average and save percentage.
Prior to his professional career, Thomas played four collegiate seasons at the University of Vermont. He was named ECAC Goaltender of the Year in 1996, helping Vermont earn their first berth in the Frozen Four. Thomas was also selected to play for Team USA at the 2010 Winter Olympics and represented the USA at the World Championships on several occasions (1996, 1998, 1998, 2008).
