NEWARK, NJ – In the first round of the 2013 NHL Draft at the Prudential Center in Newark the Florida Panthers selected Center Aleksander Barkov with the club’s second overall pick. He is expected to attend the Florida Panthers Development Camp which runs from July 8-12 at Saveology.com Iceplex.
“We are thrilled to have selected Aleksander with our first pick in the Draft,” said Panthers Executive VP and GM Dale Tallon. “He is an extremely talented player that fits all the qualities that we look for in size, skill and character. We look forward to seeing him in Florida in the near future.”
Barkov, 17, totaled 48 points (21-27-48) in 53 games with Tappara (Finnish Elite League) in the 2012-13 season, finishing second on his team in scoring, helping earn the No.1 ranking among European Skaters according to Central Scouting Services. The 6-2, 205-pounder Tampere native also recorded 16 points (7-9-16) in 32 games for Tappara in the 2011-12 season.
The center has represented Finland at each of the last two World Junior Championships. He recorded seven points (3-4-7) in six games during the 2012-13 tournament in Ufa, Russia. In 2011-12, Barkov became the youngest Finnish player ever to be selected to play in the World Junior Championships. During that same tournament Barkov became the second youngest player to ever score in the WJC at the age of 16, finishing with four points (1-3-4) in six games.
